Equinox

Winter hides in Summer's cloak
Bringing warmth and life to bloom
Rousing tender life to hope
In sunshine, though a shadow loom
Far in the sky, dark grey on blue
A raincloud, spun on nature's loom
Doth with its storms cause men to rue

Though Winter now as Spring parades
Atop the soft and budding hills
And with its songs your spirits raise
Beware! for still a traitor 'tis
Its lands in joy may seem to lie
But lo! from hidden storehouse spills
A chilling breath, a shiv'ring cry

'Tis Winter's final cruel joke
Before in brooding hall he sleeps
For Spring comes forth with lighter yoke
And banishes to chilly deeps
The season's villain, full of hate
Who now his bitter harvest reaps
Though he would fight, or flee, his fate

And Spring now reigns, with lighter hand
And men sing praise to God above
And Summer looses Winter's bands
Of icy joy and frosted love
'Til Fall takes up a changing crown
And Winter, with a sudden shove
Stands up, 'til once again cast down
